I am a direct descendant of this line. There is tons and tons of research done on this side of the Fugate family ... both by Scientist and by genealogist. Any 5 minute google session will get you the family tree if your researching your own links to the Blue Fugates. Just be very careful with names and dates. There are several Martins, Lees, Levis and Samus. Throw in the inter marriages and the fact that reading and writing and proper marriage certificates were difficult with frontier folks such as this. This article focuses on the "increeding" and though relations married, they did so in most frontier families. Cousins marrying cousins was perfectly normal back then. Also there were several families in the area ..most notably the Richies... who had blue tinted family members.

I am interested on more info.
I believe my grandparents were related to the blue people. This is where my father grew up.

We have some issues with the spleen and blood.

My grandfather was, Hodley Silus Fugate and my Grandmother was Mae Smith Fugate. My father grew up in the same place.
Any info would be helpful.

My Biology 1 class has just started teaching about this. It's called Methemoglobinemia. It's caused by lack of an enzyme that changes methemoglobin into hemoglobin. These are what color our blood. Too much of methemoglobin causes a brownish color of blood, turning the skin anywhere from light blue, to purple, and a bluish grey. Hope I answered any questions.

Thanks for clearing up this matter. I recently read a historic novel based on the memoriors of William Clarke Quantrille. It mentioned his encounter with a "blue Fugate"
woman during his venture into Kentucky in the last days of the Civil War. I got this book fo/r a friend with an interest in Civil War fiction so if he asks, I'll be able to say yes, that part is fact although their location may have been changed.
