Loraine Wyman was among the first persons to systematically search for folk songs in the Southern Appalachians.

West Virginian Dr. Patrick W. Gainer dedicated the balance of his life to a personal crusade to revitalize the region’s folk traditions.

This ballad was composed by Peyton Buckner Byrne of Greenup, KY. The fire occurred in the 1880s in the song’s namesake mill town.
