When WWII hit, American pipe makers couldn’t get imported briar wood any longer. Mountain laurel and rhododendron stepped in to fill the gap.

Neither North Carolina nor Tennessee claimed jurisdiction over Lost Cove. The boundary line wasn’t clear when it was founded. Hence the name.
