West Virginia’s “Home of the Millionaires”

Bramwell, WV, pop. 4,000 at the turn of the 20th century, was the richest town per capita in the US, with at least 14 millionaires there.

We people of the Mission home went together to the Lord in prayers, and told him to give a home to his orphan children.

Coal barons in Whipple, WV issued ‘Esau scrip’ to destitute miners’ wives. The women were expected to repay the loan with bodily services.

Knoxville’s been agonizing about its identity for a while. Are we a major educational center, a green-tech energy powerhouse? Or “authentic?”

They were started as a way to provide a less expensive (to the taxpayers) alternative to what we would now call “welfare.”
