Coal barons in Whipple, WV issued ‘Esau scrip’ to destitute miners’ wives. The women were expected to repay the loan with bodily services.

This historical novel is set Depression-era Harlan, KY, where lethal labor strife leads to the county’s desperate coal mine wars.

Hallowed ground. It is a term most do not think about these days. In these so-called modern times we tend to forget words like hallowed.

Started in 1903, the Kelly’s Creek Colliery Company commissary served about 75-90 miners living at or near Ward, WV.
