20th century SC upcountry transitioned from traditional dependence on cotton as a cash crop to raising cattle as a major farm income source.

It’s changed so much you have to be a big farmer to make a living because a little farmer can’t hardly make a living.

The greatest interest in poultry is shown by farmers living in the ‘runs’ and ‘forks.’ On a typical ‘ridge’ farm, the farm land is rougher.
