On the way home from school, we’d stop at Hatfield’s Grocery over at Roach, get off the bus, wait there for the driver to come and pick us up.

I began to look at the Tennessee hills differently. They held the history of my family. They held the history of the resources I depend on.

Where’d I go to school? WV, Pleasant Valley. Forest Home. One room. A pot-bellied stove in it. We carried wood to keep the fire going.
