Shivaree: a 19th & early 20th century Appalachian custom (originated in 16th century France) of teasing a couple on their wedding night.

If you’ve taken part in a shivaree and played post office and spin-the-bottle, chances are you’ve been around a half-century or more.

Most folks don’t know anything about an Appalachian Shivaree, but it is not something a groom wants to face on his first night of marriage.
