The Pack Horse Librarians

The Pack Horse Library Project (est. 1935) aimed to provide reading materials to rural portions of Eastern Kentucky with no library access.

They didn’t have hot water. They didn’t have toilet paper. They didn’t have doors on the bathroom . . . the girl’s bathroom.

The snow’s been collecting on the garden and the blooming season seems very far away. Of course the seed catalogs have started trickling in already.

Barbara Frietchie’s story has been immortalized in plays, poems, & Frederick, MD lore. John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem put the town on the map.

Highlander Folk School for years was the only place in the South where white and African-American adults could live and work together.
