Horace Kephart: A Great-Grandfather Appreciation

“We are, my brother & I, forever looking for glimpses of our great-grandfather,” says Laura Kephart. “He’s been glorified; he’s been vilified.

Texas Gladden (1895-1967), was an American folk singer best known for her traditional Appalachian ballad style of singing.

Born in Viper, Kentucky, Jean Ritchie came from a family of musicians who have preserved folk traditions for generations.

In the mid ’30s De Beck abandoned Spark Plug, subordinated Barney, and brought bodacious Hillbilly Snuffy Smith to the fore.

For all his prowess, George O’Brien manages to project Daniel Boone as a shy, unassuming adventurer, which is presumably what the man was.
