The Devil danced on Fiddlers Mountain

Rose Thompson spent summer of 1946 in Clayton, in Rabun County GA, where an elderly black preacher told her the tale of Fiddler’s Mountain.

Maryland’s own winged beast? The Snallygaster for several years in the late 1920s and early 1930s caused a sensation in Frederick County.

Every holler in Appalachia, in every state, has its very own Halloween superstitions.

This was the place, so legend has it, where sheets gently floated from the beds of no longer sleeping travelers.

The only cause for alarm was that a black cat had come down the chimney with a cap on its head. This was accepted as a case of witchcraft.
