Virginia’s governor issued Land Grants for services rendered. A headright system offered 50 acres to anyone who paid his own way to the state.

“La Vue Premiere,” by William P. Hopen, depicts the arrival of the first French immigrants who settled in this region in the early 18th century.

On Jan 17, 1781, American General Daniel Morgan scored a stunning victory over British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre “Barbarous Ban” Tarleton.
