Dams on the Upper Yough: What Almost Wasn’t

Engineers, politicians, power companies spent the first half of the 20th century trying to reduce the Youghiogheny River to a series of lakes.

The story of 3 days in the summer of 1936, as a government-built dam is about to flood an Appalachian town, and a little girl goes missing.

The dam’s benefits may be now be seen as immeasurable in preventing loss of lives & property, but there were negatives associated with it.

Lost under 70 feet of water in the New River. The place is known as Dunkard Bottom today but to its residents, it was Mahanain.
