Book Review: ‘Voices from the Headwaters’

Appalachian State University students collect remembrances of mountain life as it used to be at the headwaters of the New River’s North Fork.

The Center for Appalachian Studies & Services, & The Appalachian Project are on a mission to change America’s misconceptions on Appalachia.

How has heirloom seed gardening helped develop community in Lumpkin County? What’s the tradition’s status? What heirloom seeds still exist?

The book provides excellent examples for courses primarily in literature, but also in history, film, folklife and cultural studies.

The contest has been established by the family of Cleudis Robbins to celebrate both his life and the Appalachian storytelling tradition.
