The May Queen: a mini ‘Miss America’

Crowning a college ‘May Queen’ to celebrate May Day. From the 1920s to the early 1960s it was game changer for the young women involved.

Plenty of Knotts County, KY politicians bought gingerbread cakes from elderly women and distributed them to people hoping to gain extra votes.

The good ship CLOTHESPIN at the 1938 Spud & Splinters parade, with Miss Jeanette Richards the Sweetheart and her Yoemanettes riding in the parade.
