A forgotten piece of West Virginia history

William Davis, 1st black man nominated for governor in WV & Booker T. Washington’s first teacher, may be a forgotten piece of state history.

This was just one of many trips for Eleanor Roosevelt into the mining areas, but it started the homestead idea.

When Dad learned Eleanor Roosevelt was due to visit Arthurdale, her personal project, he made sure he was among the crowd gathered.

Started in 1903, the Kelly’s Creek Colliery Company commissary served about 75-90 miners living at or near Ward, WV.

On the way home from school, we’d stop at Hatfield’s Grocery over at Roach, get off the bus, wait there for the driver to come and pick us up.
