Fire!

In July 1925, a fire engulfed the Emporium Department Store on Pack Square in Asheville, NC. A salesperson & a firefighter died in the blaze.

In the spring of 1861, Alabama Unionists considered the impending war a wicked, treasonous undertaking and wanted no part of it.

Thurmond, WV will always hold a place in Ripley’s Believe It or Not for the Dunglen Hotel’s fourteen year continuous poker run.

His gravestone reads “Lived alone, suffered alone, died alone,” but in the 1870’s Nick Grindstaff was Johnson County’s most colorful resident
