Outrunning a North Georgia Home Guard

I was always told that the large hollow tree in the the ‘Sheep Hole’ was where Uncle George hid after his escape from the Home Guard.

Benjamin Parks is said by some to be the person who discovered gold in Georgia in 1828, west of the Chestatee River in Lumpkin County.

Wherever evangelist Samuel Porter Jones preached, liquor stores closed, theaters and jails emptied, and cursing was reduced to whispers.

My life allowed me to travel far from these hills, from the struggle to survive, the life of the mountain folk. But still, it never leaves me.
