The Greenbrier Bunker: Cold War Shelter for V.I.P.s (part 1 of 2)

If the Soviet Union had attacked, the entire US Congress would’ve been whisked to the bunker at The Greenbrier resort in Sulphur Springs, WV.

My intention was to hunt snakes, and I dreamed of coming home with a beautiful and frightening diamondback rattlesnake skin.

Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916 after the passage of the 1911 Weeks Act; one of the first national forests in the eastern US.

While it’s a little harder to find these days, I believe the age-old spirit of Appalachia still resides in pockets of East Tennessee.

The building on Baltimore Avenue these women trained in was dedicated in 1892. It seems likely this photograph was taken on the hospital’s grounds.
