Virginia’s governor issued Land Grants for services rendered. A headright system offered 50 acres to anyone who paid his own way to the state.

In 1872 a former Confederate surgeon named Dr. Charles T. Pepper started a soon-to-be-thriving business dispensing patent medicines in Rural Retreat, VA.
